EBSQ Show "Light My Way: Artist-Made Lanterns" Clarification

In case anyone is wondering what we mean when we say "lantern", let me clarify by saying that we mean it in the true sense of the word.

lan·tern
Pronunciation[lan-tern]
–noun

1. a transparent or translucent, usually portable, case for enclosing a light and protecting it from the wind, rain, etc.

2. the chamber at the top of a lighthouse, surrounding the light.

Portability is not required as show entries can be electrified. What is important is that the light be enclosed in the manner of a lantern. As for the second definition... it must be full size to qualify. ;)

I have, too. I would love to give a definitive yes or no answer but it will depend on the construction of the entry. A votive candle holder also has sides and a bottom but is obviously not a lantern. The light would have to be well protected and whether or not it qualifies will be on case by case basis.

gotcha, and thanks. i'm guessing it's okay that the lantern be lit by a candle, as long as the construction of the piece is lanternesque and not just a simple votive holder?

jeez, this is getting hairy! lol

Not really, it just sounds like you maybe over thinking it. A lantern was made to protect a light from the elements. We are looking for artistic expression and while an entry may not actually function well in a wind storm, it should obviously be a lantern. It can not be something so far from it's source that it no longer can be considered a lantern or recognized as such. That is pretty much it.
