Almost Art: Dozen Cupcakes

It doesn't matter that they won't even open their doors for business until 5pm today. I am absolutely in love with Dozen Cupcakes in the Squirrel Hill neighbourhood here in Pittsburgh (1707 Murray, just off the corner of Murray and Forbes for you local folks). Dozen has capitalized on finding a niche and filling it exceedingly well. They were also very smart in putting their amazing cupcake photographs front and center on their website. I dare you to click this link and not die a little inside from want of cupcake. If the pictures don't get you, the copy about them surely will! It seems there's a lesson to be learned here, but I am too distracted by the pretty.

Welcome to the neighbourhood, Dozen; I think it's safe to say you'll be getting an order or two from EBSQ soon!

Where on Ellsworth? Closer to Spahr or Negley?

It is between College and Maryland and has a really cool atmosphere and the cupcakes are the real thing. Not sure of the exact address but it is across from Hollywood Tans. Not too sweet, but just perfect.

Aha, same block as my former employer, Chiz. Plus I saw that the divine Susie Treon is baking for them, so I'll definitely check it out next time I'm in Shadyside! Thanks so much for the tip!

Dozen by far is the best cupcake bakery. I have been to many cupcake bakeries all over the U.S. from Seattle to New York, and to CoCo's and Dozen has "taken the cake" on being the best out of all of those places. The buttercream is perfect to compliment the cake, which yes is dryer than some other mass produced lard filled cakes, but for gourmet cupcakes, Dozen is the best.

I have to say Pittsburgh's "Cupcake War" is a win-win situation for everybody. Any time buttercream is involved, it's all good in my book! And I have to say, Dozen's buttercream is stellar!
