I have, too. I would love to give a definitive yes or no answer but it will depend on the construction of the entry. A votive candle holder also has sides and a bottom but is obviously not a lantern. The light would have to be well protected and whether or not it qualifies will be on case by case basis.

gotcha, and thanks. i'm guessing it's okay that the lantern be lit by a candle, as long as the construction of the piece is lanternesque and not just a simple votive holder?

Not really, it just sounds like you maybe over thinking it. A lantern was made to protect a light from the elements. We are looking for artistic expression and while an entry may not actually function well in a wind storm, it should obviously be a lantern. It can not be something so far from it's source that it no longer can be considered a lantern or recognized as such. That is pretty much it.
